Oily Skin

How to manage

We all are born with a different genetic make up with your skin’s oiliness being no exception. Your general skin type is determined by the quantity of natural oils present within your skin.

Based on oil production, your skin may be categorized as dry, combination or oily skin. If your skin produces excessive oil, you have an oily skin type. Oily skin is characterized by the presence of shiny or greasy appearance, which is persistent in nature.

Oily skin type exhibits characteristics such as a shiny face, makeup that does not stay on, frequent breakouts, acne, blackheads, whiteheads, or enlarged pores.

Having oily skin is simply skin which has an excessive production of “Sebum”, by the oil-producing sebaceous glands. The pores also appear enlarged. While you cannot change your pore size, Melanopeel® can certainly help you minimize and clarify your pores.

Oil glands attached to hair follicles.

These sebaceous glands are oil-producing glands located next to the hair follicles of your skin. Sebum is an oily substance that protects and hydrates your skin. It is essential for maintaining skin in a healthy and hydrated state. This sebum, along with your sweat is secreted through the pores.

However, if excess sebum is secreted, your pores can become inflamed and clogged. Bacteria in the skin feed on this sebum, resulting in the secretion of inflammation products. This is one of the reasons why acne becomes inflamed & irritated.

Factors influencing your skin’s oil production:

Genetics

Genetic makeup is crucial in deciding what your skin type will be, as oily skin runs in families. You are likely to have over-active sebaceous glands if your parents have oily skin.

Hormonal Changes

Hormonal fluctuations associated with puberty, pregnancy and menopause are known to affect sebum production in your body. These fluctuations, along with stress, can lead to excessive oil production.

Over-washing

If you scrub too hard with washcloths or use coarse exfoliants, sebaceous glands may produce excessive oils. This is especially true if you are using cleansers of the wrong pH. The Melanopeel® cleansers are all formulated at the correct pH compatible for your skin.

Environment

Your environmental conditions where you live also affects the production of natural oil in your skin. Humidity, tropical & hot climates are known to stimulate sebaceous glands, leading to oily skin. Many persons are more vulnerable to breakouts during summer, as sebum and sweat are more likely to mix and clog pores during this season.

Medications

Some medication such as hormone replacement therapies and oral contraceptives can accelerate oil production. Certain steroids and other medications can also cause excessive oil production.

Under-Moisturizing your skin

If you are not meeting your skin’s moisturizing needs and demands, you are allowing your skin to produce excessive oil. Always ensure that your skin is properly moisturized and hydrated using hydrators and our natural bio-compatible skin oils.

Poor diet

Proper diet plays a critical role in your skin’s health. Having a poor diet can cause internal skin and body inflammation, which may lead to the overactive sebaceous gland. Taking skin-calming fish oil supplements and anti-inflammatory minerals such as zinc can help in lowering oil production.

Combating oily skin & pore size:

Managing oily skin needs 4 main elements:

  1. An oil down-regulator. Melanopeel extensively relies on the magic of mandelic acid, which is excellent at signalling your sebaceous glands to tone down their activity. Glycolic acid and niacinamide will also helps with oil reduction.
  2. An oil absorber. Mandelic acid is a great oil absorber, but works even better with other active ingredients like salicylic acid which has a strong oil affinity.
  3. An oil mattifier. Mandelic acid and salicylic acid are both capable of mattifying excess oils.
  4. A pore refiner. Our Clear Complexion Acne Gel is both an oil mattifier & refines pores to a smooth airbrushed finish.
